This song is one of my favourites. It started with me wanting to build something that authentically fused my culture and background into the music I made. I started with the rhythm that drew from the Sudanese music I loved and built in elements of all of the musical cultures I experienced growing up. The lyrics are about the feeling of being on a hamster wheel for success but not knowing if I’ve elected to get on it or if I was doing it for others. The answer is to take a moment and breathe through it
lyrics
[Verse 1]
I’ve been running, trying to conquer this race
I couldn’t stop to rest, I had to keep up my pace
Time is the master, keeps moving faster
I try to keep up, how long can I last for
Strive and I seek, I reach for the peak
With every step, my target retreats
Around again I go, circling around my goals
They’re ever changing, these hurdles I’m facing
I’ve got to settle and breathe
[Verse 2]
Joy is the answer, but the question’s untold
The road is a hazardous way, worth it if the promise unfolds
I’m tired of trying, can’t keep on fighting
A cause that, I’m no longer buying
I need to be, I need to free
The light of love buried in me
I found the only truth, I found the place to choose
In liberation, I found my salvation
I’ve got to settle and breathe
[Chorus]
[Bridge (In Arabic – translated below)]
I’ve gotten tired, and so has my longing and exhaustion
I’m running and carrying my sorrows with me
[Chorus]
